Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
KAP
Ketamine is a medication that originally has been used as an anesthetic and now has found to be effective in alleviating symptoms of treatment resistant depression and other psychological issues including anxiety, substance use disorder, and ptsd.
While there are clinics and that offer ketamine as a stand alone treatment, it has been found that the most successful way to achieve robust and long-lasting benefits is to use ketamine in the context of a therapeutic process and relationship.
Ketamine assisted therapy combines the therapeutic effects of ketamine with the support of psychotherapy. A client can explore thoughts and feelings evoked by the medicine in a therapeutic context and can integrate the resulting insights to create lasting effects.
Who Benefits From KAP
At the initiation of treatment a KAP client will be assessed both by the facilitating therapist and a prescribing medical provider to determine eligibility for treatment. Emerging research shows that Ketamine Assisted therapy can benefit many different mental health issues such as treatment resistant depression, substance use disorder, ptsd, and more. Many clients pursue KAP when they have been seeking and benefiting from therapy but find themselves stuck in some way. KAP can be a great catalyst for deepened work to help progress as part of a greater journey toward wellness. This process can have the potential for profound shifts and does ask for a commitment of time and resources to be able to get the full benefits of the program. A personalized treatment plan can be discussed with medical providers.
HOW IT WORKS
KAP has immediate antidepressant effects that come with a decrease in physical pain. It allows access to deeper processing that can lead to a change in perspective, relationship, and worldview. It can bring down the chatter of depressive and negative thoughts, increase self esteem, and help motivation for behavioral and lifestyle changes. KAP can access deeper fears and existential distress allowing relief that is not touched by modern medications.
The dose level can lead to different effects ranging from mild dissociation and antidepressant effect, moderate dissociation with an out of body experience and an expansive sense of self, to full dissociation with various transpersonal and mystical experiences.
